Heatwaves turn cul de sacs into improvised clinics, as crews move from brick house to brick house checking on older neighbours and children in stifling rooms. 

The coming season is expected to push those routines further, with climate drivers aligning toward hotter days and longer runs of extreme heat.[1]

On a farm outside Dubbo, the family has marked a line on the dam wall showing where water once sat at the same time last decade. 

That line now sits well above the current surface, and the paddocks closest to the house are already earmarked for early destocking if forecasts for reduced rainfall prove accurate. 

Their decisions mirror a national picture, where El Niño conditions in the Pacific and a warmed atmosphere are reshaping expectations for the 2026–27 summer across Australia’s regions.[3]

Heatwaves and temperature extremes

The Bureau of Meteorology’s long range outlook points to a strong El Niño event combined with the ongoing trend of rising national temperatures. This combination increases the likelihood of above average maximums and more frequent extreme heat days across much of southern and eastern Australia during the 2026–27 summer. 

Recent climate updates highlight widespread rainfall deficiencies and record warm months in several regions, underscoring the shift in baseline conditions.[1]

Temperature anomalies are expected to be most pronounced in inland New South Wales, northern Victoria, southern Queensland and parts of South Australia, where El Niño typically suppresses cloud cover and rainfall. These regions have experienced repeated warm years since 2000, and the current event overlays that long term warming trend. 

 Urban centres such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane face particular exposure due to dense built environments and limited nighttime cooling.

Prolonged heatwaves place pressure on urban infrastructure, including transport networks, hospitals, and electricity grids. Heat stress increases demand for emergency care and intensifies chronic health conditions, while rail lines, roads, and substations experience higher failure risks under sustained high temperatures. 

Electricity demand for cooling rises sharply during multi day heat events, challenging generation and transmission systems and increasing the likelihood of localised outages in vulnerable suburbs.[5]

Bushfires and fire risk

Fire agencies and emergency planners are already treating the 2026–27 bushfire season as a high concern period. AFAC’s recent seasonal outlook highlights elevated fire potential across southern, central and eastern New South Wales, large parts of Victoria, south-east South Australia and southern Western Australia. 

Long term dryness, persistent rainfall deficiencies and accumulated fuel loads underpin this assessment.[2]

The expected length of the fire season is increasing, particularly in southern and eastern Australia where warmer springs and delayed autumn rains extend windows for dangerous fire weather. Climate driven changes in vegetation and soil moisture mean grasslands and forests can transition more quickly from growth to flammable conditions. 

Once ignited, fires in these landscapes can spread rapidly, with higher intensity and greater ember attack on peri urban communities.[3]

Heightened bushfire risk carries significant public health and community safety challenges. Smoke exposure aggravates respiratory and cardiovascular disease, especially among children, older people and those with existing conditions. Evacuations disrupt schooling, employment and cultural activities, including on Aboriginal lands where fire has long been used as a tool for caring for Country, and where cultural burning programs highlight alternative approaches to risk reduction.

Water and drought

The Bureau’s climate update shows rainfall for late winter and spring likely below average across much of eastern and southern Australia, with some storages already at or below half capacity. This pattern, combined with El Niño, points toward increased drought risk through the 2026–27 summer, particularly in southern and central regions that rely on winter and spring inflows. 

Stream flow data already indicate below average flows in parts of the south, east and west.[1]

Reduced rainfall and higher evaporation rates affect water storage and urban supplies. Metropolitan systems may maintain headline security through large reservoirs and desalination plants, yet smaller regional towns and agricultural districts face tighter restrictions and greater exposure to supply interruptions. 

Groundwater dependent communities, including many First Nations communities, are particularly sensitive to prolonged deficits and require targeted monitoring and support.[6]

Agriculture enters the summer with significant climate risk. Drought conditions reduce pasture quality, constrain stock carrying capacity and lower crop yields, especially for rain fed grains and horticulture. 

ABARES modelling has shown that climate variability and warming reduce average farm incomes over time, with dry summers amplifying financial stress and debt burdens across regional economies.[6]

Coastal and marine impacts

Rising sea levels and more frequent extreme sea level events increase exposure for coastal communities during summer. El Niño can alter storm tracks and swell patterns, while background sea level rise lifts the baseline for storm surges. 

Low lying suburbs around Sydney, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Perth face greater risk of coastal flooding, particularly where development has encroached on dunes, wetlands, and estuaries.[4]

Summer storm surges threaten infrastructure such as roads, rail corridors, ports, and wastewater systems. Coastal ecosystems, including mangroves, saltmarshes and seagrass beds, experience increased erosion and inundation stress. Where hard seawalls and revetments have replaced natural buffers, wave energy can concentrate, accelerating beach loss and undermining public assets and private properties along the shoreline.

Marine heatwaves, defined as prolonged periods of unusually high sea surface temperatures, are becoming more frequent and intense around Australia. These events affect fisheries, coral reefs and biodiversity along the coast, including the Great Barrier Reef and temperate reef systems in the south. 

Warmer waters shift species distributions, stress corals and kelp forests, and disrupt commercial and recreational fishing, with direct economic consequences for coastal towns.[8]

Health, ecosystems, and economy

Extreme heat events have clear impacts on physical and mental health. Hospital admissions for heat related illness increase during heatwaves, while mental health services report higher demand linked to stress, sleep disruption and anxiety about climate risks. 

These effects are uneven, with low income households, renters in poorly insulated housing and people without access to cooling facing greater harm.[7]

Native species and biodiversity hotspots confront multiple pressures during hotter, drier summers. Altered fire regimes, reduced water availability and heat stress impact habitat quality and species survival, from alpine ecosystems to arid inland wetlands. 

First Nations communities, whose cultural practices and knowledge systems are closely tied to Country, emphasise the need for stronger partnerships in land management and climate adaptation to protect both ecological and cultural values.

Tourism and outdoor recreation are sensitive to climate extremes. Smoke, heat and coastal hazards can reduce visitor numbers, close trails and beaches, and shift seasonal patterns for iconic destinations. Economic sectors most vulnerable during the coming summer include agriculture, tourism, energy and emergency services, each facing higher operating costs and climate driven losses that demand coordinated adaptation and risk governance.

Conclusion

The 2026–27 Australian summer will unfold under the influence of a strong El Niño and a warmed climate, with implications across heat, fire, water, coasts, and health. 

Evidence from national agencies and scientific research points toward elevated risk rather than certainty of specific disasters, yet those risks intersect with existing vulnerabilities in housing, infrastructure, ecosystems, and communities.[1]

Governance choices over the coming months will shape how those risks translate into lived experience. Prioritising frontline communities, integrating First Nations knowledge, strengthening emergency capacity and aligning planning law with climate projections can reduce harm and support a more resilient summer. 

The science is clear that climate drivers are changing, and institutions now face a test of how quickly they respond with accountable, evidence based action.
